For comparison, here is the same image I posted, but with higher quality lighting. Is it worth the extra time? Personally, I think so. I can still do more to improve it, but it doesn't make me say, 'ugh' the way the first one did.

  2. I think a little bit dark ...
The walls are covered well, but their faces are not visible.

  3. Agreed it looks better in several aspects but you really need to place some lighting inside the house, natural lighting from the side of the house your gaining the sunlighting from if you know what i mean

  4. I personally much prefer the writing to graphics anyway. I don't usually pay much attention to them. I just seem to be quite content with the visuals my mind comes up with if given inspiration.
If it were up to me, I'd only use pics for locations, if at all. Doesn't mean you have to go crazy on the descriptions. Often describing something less than detailed can be more evocative.
But you really need to do whatever fits best for you. If you enjoy doing the graphics, or feel they add to the experience for you, go ahead.
Just don't try to overburden yourself with ambitions. One of the most important things you learn in game design is being fine with what you can realistically do, rather than what you would do if you pursued no other goals for the rest of your life. At least for me it was a hard lesson :D
